Exploring new routes

One thing that’s great about cycling longer distances, is the fact that it becomes easier to explore those out of the way places. I’ve been looking at maps for several years wondering if there was a (legal) way to link Dixie Mountain at the end of Skyline, with the Scappose-Vernonia HWY without getting on HWY 30.

a new to me road that exists beyond a gate. I chose the right route here.

I’ve poured over google maps and used the App PDF Maps to try and source a route through the network of unmarked gravel roads that spread like a drunken spider’s web North of where Otto Miller descends from the intersection of Dixie Mtn Rd and Smoke Ranch Rd.

The good news is that I found a way to link Pumpkin Ridge Rd with Smoke Ranch rd, but after joining that road I just kept exploring dead ends. That’s ok because every dead end is another one I can mark off of the maze of tracks that criss-cross the land out there.

I met some moto riders that were on a similar quest without any luck as well. I’ll find it one day, probably as the days get a bit longer and warmer. It gets cold out in some of those valleys.
